My TEDx Talk

Our health system needs radical, transformative change—urgently.

We have the power to create a system that actually works for everyone.

I'm an emergency physician, father, and writer on a journey to make that happen.

I'm writing a book—a true story that highlights how our health system might have turned out differently.

In the late nineteenth century, everything in health and medicine was up for grabs. Hospitals and nursing were novel developments. Germ theory was still being contested. Medical specialties were practically nonexistent, with surgery just starting to show promise.

Public health—that is, approaching health improvement with whole populations and not just individuals in mind—just might have dominated the future.

What did people from disadvantaged populations do at this time, free from all the assumptions and policies and social norms that we take for granted today?

The answers have been surprising and inspiring.

I've spent the past 6 years researching and writing. Now I'm working to publish this important story.

My Publications

I've published in academic journals on a variety of topics, mostly centered on complex systems thinking and health.

My research and writing has found its home in scientific journals like The Lancet, Health Policy and Planning, PLOS Medicine, The Journal of Emergency Medicine, and others.
